I’m an avid reader of Jess Lively’s blog.

Last year there was a turn-a-round in the blogosphere, caused by one of Jess’ posts entitled ‘Things I’m afraid to tell you’. It sparked a wave of prominent bloggers, to open up and admit to their readers that their lives weren’t as perfect as they seemed on their blogs. I think this was such a great idea. With social media throwing us images of perfection at every click, it’s refreshing to have people be so open and honest. Reading many of the posts that were written as a result, made me feel so much better about myself.

I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed at the moment, and so I thought it might be a nice idea to get my own problems off of my chest… I’m a year late to the party, but who cares. This post is for no one but me, anyway.

Here goes…

I regularly feel overwhelmed, and I fear this is heavily due to my continuous procrastination. If I’m honest with myself, I’m not nearly as busy as I feel I am, simply because I spent half the amount of time I should be spending on work, on other less important things.

I always second guess my design skills. I know that I’m a good designer, but somehow I always manage to feel inferior to some of the other people I studied with.

I was disappointed with my final mark for my Btech. (Although this wasn’t my fault, and was entirely the fault of my lecturers who spent too little time marking, in my opinion.)

Since I finished 3rd year and stopped seeing my 3 best friends at varsity everyday, life has become much less fun and far less bright and sparkly. In other words, I haven’t enjoyed life nearly as much since 2011.

I’m terrified that I won’t get to start a business with those 3 wonderful friends from varsity.

I’m scared that I won’t be able to design and code websites, even though I just spent the same amount of money it cost me to study for a year at varsity, on two month-long short courses all about HTML & CSS & PHP.

I’m an absolute mess in the kitchen. It is IMPOSSIBLE for me to make a normal breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast and not have something go incredibly wrong.

I often worry that a married life and children won’t be enough to keep me happy one day. (That’s a very scary one.)

Sometimes I regret being a graphic designer and think that I should have been a journalist and news reporter instead. That’s not very often though.

I always seem more confident than I’m feeling.

Sometimes I wish I had someone to stick up for me the way I stick up for other people.

I’m scared that I’m not going to finish all the marking that I have to do before I leave for Europe in June. Ugh.

How cute are these new shoes?

I’ve always been more of a heels girl, but when I’m dragging my laptop and gazillion bags (for some reason I always seem to have a lot of stuff with me) around Cape Town I have to be practical, and flats are the way to go.

I bought all of these at Mr Price, who I have to say have really picked up their act in the last while. I’ve been liking their clothes more and more in the last few months, and their online shopping site is simply fantastic.

Spent a lazy Sunday afternoon with Michane and Klaudia, nibbling on treats and sipping wine. Klaudia has the most beautiful courtyard in her block of flats, so we relaxed outside, and were visited by countless squirrels and a bunny rabbit!

The Btech project is slowly taking form. It’s becoming slightly annoying, because I’ve given up my entire life in complete devotion to achieving a fantastic mark. It’ll all be worth it in the end, I’m sure, and I have an amazing lecturer, Chantelle Arpesella, who’s guiding me through the chaos.

Anyway, I sound like I hate what I’m doing. Let me just be clear, I don’t. I live for design and creativity. And the most important part of the design process? Great references! Take a look at mine…

After creating such lovely images for the last edition of Spar Savour magazine, my friend Leigh and I were asked to do some more work for the online mag. Before I went away to Thailand, I had dinner at a fantastic restaurant called The Dog’s Bollucks with my fabulous friends Klaudia and Michane. They make the most overwhelmingly delicious burgers you’ve ever laid eyes on! I ate the dream-worthy New Yorker (which is very sneakily a lot more burny than you’d think, which I loved). Check out the photos below of their fantastic food and awesome, laid-back atmosphere.

Remember when I shared my proposal to Seventeen Magazine SA to design their homework diary? Well… I got the gig! (Always wanted to say that…) Click ‘read more’ below if you’re keen to find out how my Btech project is going.

Time is flying by, and I’m really feeling the pressure right now. Aside from my internship, I’m having to complete all of my Btech work and design the Seventeen homework diary. But just like the little quote stuck on my desk note board says - “The pressure is good for you.” At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

I’ve developed my campaign much further than just the Seventeen Homework Diary. My target audience is remaining teenage girls, but I’ve selection the age group 11- 15 years to create stricter target market boundaries, making design much easier.

The photograph on the top image is of my cousin (middle) and two of her friends. I gathered these girls and let them watch 3 documentary trailers, asked them questions, sparked discussion and filmed the whole thing! To say that I was overwhelmed by their responses and their knowledge and wisdom at such a young age, about topics such as gender roles and the media’s portrayal of women and girls, was astounding. They honestly blew me away. I was very proud of my cousin and thankful to each of them. Although I did sneakily bribe them with cupcakes from Charly’s Bakery.

As you can see from my weakly illustrated but easy enough to grasp flowchart below, I have created a completely flawless (yes, I really do believe that it is) campaign that is self-sustaining.

It begins with an online magazine, which has girls within the target audience on the cover. These cover girls need to write in and submit themselves, and must have achieved some kind of signifiant accomplishment at school or in their community to be eligible. All the articles are based around the idea that we’ll be giving girls the tools they need to increase their confidence levels and become

Advertising space from the magazine will go towards buying the rights to screen the documentary ‘Killing Us Softly’ in schools all around South Africa. This would encompass designing a proposal for school to buy into the screening, creating a teachers aid kit and finally a student promo item that would take the girls back to the magazine, boosting readership and therefore sales.

It works in a total cycle.

The Seventeen Mag diary is becoming more of a parallel experiment and information source to determine how other publications go about doing things. However I’m just as excited about it as I am for the Btech campaign. It makes my heart skip a beat thinking that 4 years ago I was sitting in maths class, not paying attention and wishing that I could just be a homework diary decorator, and now I’m designing one that’s going to be mass produced thousands of times. It’s an extremely satisfying feeling…
